Bow Families: exploring natural flower dyes with Christina Brown

Taking inspiration from the flora and fauna around us, join artist Christina Brown to make abstract and painterly prints using colourful, natural dyes extracted from fresh flowers. Open to children and families of all ages – all materials provided
Flowers and leaves are a really creative way that we can take inspiration from the natural world around us to create one-of-a-kind, sustainable artworks.
In this workshop, children will play around and arrange a selection of flowers, petals, and leaves in a design of their choice. They will cover these botanical designs with pieces of calico fabric and cardboard, before using a mallet to gently ‘pound’ and squeeze out the colours. On peeling the flowers away, they will be left with a special watercolour-like dyed textile print which they can further embellish and decorate with hand embroidery, fabric markers, and other fun materials.
In this workshop, children will learn about natural dyes, composition of an artwork, and how to experiment with colour to create unique, abstract prints.
This event is an inclusive, friendly environment which is accessible to all abilities and age groups.
Bow Families is a series of free, drop-in family art workshops that take place on the last Sunday of every month in the Bow Arts Courtyard. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity for local families to get creative and try something new! Each session is led by a Bow Arts’ Artist and all materials are provided.
More about Christina Brown
Christina Rose Brown is an artist, mother and teacher.
Her work is semi-autobiographical, often featuring depictions of the female form, or images of motherhood, to explore themes of female identity and universal and personal lived experience.
She works predominantly with textiles and paint. Her process of making is slow and thoughtful and incorporates elements of chance, creating a space for mindful reflection within a world that is so fast-paced.
Access information
The Bow Arts Trust courtyard room has step-free access throughout from street level, including to the accessible toilet, and is service animal friendly. This venue does not have a hearing loop system. Accessible parking is not available on-site but blue badge parking can be found 500m away on Fairfield Road.
