Bow families: tying your own protection threads for luck with Alison Lam
Sunday 31st May 2026 , 11:00am to 1:00pm
The Dragon Boat Festival traditions include tying threads for good luck and taking respite from the summer heat. Join Alison Lam as we make our own protection bracelets with threads, wool and ribbons. Open to children and families of all ages – all materials provided.

In Chinese philosophy, five colour threads in red, yellow, blue, white, and green symbolise protection and blessings. Traditionally, families tie these threads on children’s wrists, imbuing them with wishes for luck, health and safety.
In this workshop, children will learn about the possibilities of tying their own protection bracelets with a wide range of materials like threads, wool and ribbons and attaching to a small clay bean or paper tag. Come and share stories of what you want to protect and who you are holding safe!
This event is an inclusive, friendly environment which is accessible to all abilities and age groups.
Bow Families is a series of free, drop-in family art workshops that take place on the last Sunday of every month in the Bow Arts Courtyard Room. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity for local families to get creative and try something new! Each session is led by a Bow Arts’ Artist and all materials are provided.
