Join us for a guided tour of new exhibition Raw Materials: Textiles, exploring the history of textiles in east London, followed by the chance to explore all the way up the River Lea, the waterway that inspired the exhibition.
After the exhibition tour, we will be walking our bikes to the River Lea (10 minutes from the Gallery) and cycling along the towpath, pausing at points of notable textile sites / factories along the way. The tour is a great opportunity to learn more about the rich industrial history that lies hidden on the river banks — imagining acres of calico drying fields and visiting the site of the dye factory where one of the first synthetic blue dyes was invented.
If you’re unsure of cycling on the road, you can bring your bike to the Gallery on the District Line (Bow Road) or the DLR (Bow Church). We will finish our cycle at Clapton, from which you can cycle back or take your bike on mainline trains to Stratford or Liverpool Street stations. The cycle will last around an hour and a half.
