Discover the East London Group Walking Tour

Saturday 2 December 2017 - 12:00 am

A chance to walk the streets and see the sights behind the paintings of the historic East London Group, whose paintings are currently exhibiting as part of The Working Artist exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery.
Working during the inter-war period, the East London Group was made up of ordinary working men and women, attending art classes and exhibiting paintings alongside their day jobs. Gordon Joly will take walkers on a journey through the East End of the Group’s past, pointing out sites they painted and places they studied, as well as other notable sites relating to art around Bow.
The walk will also visit three new public works of art, commissioned to commemorate the Group alongside the exhibition, installed at Bow Church (Lindsey Mendick), the Bow Bells pub (Marcus Orlandi) and Queen Mary University of London (Maxima Smith), where the tour will finish with an exclusive chance to see remnants of East London Group member Phyllis Bray’s mural at the People’s Palace.
Walk begins at the Nunnery Gallery, ends at Queen Mary University of London and lasts roughly an hour. Booking is advisable
