Lakeside Garden Club: Banner Making Workshop
Saturday 17th January 2026 , 11:00am to 1:00pm
Over two sessions, artist Marcus Orlandi invites the Lakeside Garden Club to design, imagine, and create a new communal banner inspired by the community garden at the Lakeside Centre.

Banner construction has traditionally brought people together to campaign for peace, show pride in their community, or speak out against social injustices. “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” is a quote attributed to Audrey Hepburn that speaks to a sense of hope in the work done today. In this session with the Lakeside Garden Club, Marcus will guide participants to come together and produce fabric leaves for a communal banner. The finished banner will go on display for people to visit and view at the Thamesmead Social Cafe.
Participants will be guided in how to make the banner, which comprises of very simple drawing, collage and applique techniques. No drawing skills are needed, and all materials are provided. The only requirement for participants is that they can hold a pencil and feel comfortable cutting with larger fabric scissors. Otherwise, participants are welcome to help with the design of the banner, and place the pieces onto the backing fabric.
The first session will take place on Saturday 17th January 2026, and the second session will take place on Saturday 31st January 2026.
These workshops will take place inside the Media Space, inside the Lakeside Centre.
