Nunnery Café Exhibition | Bhajan Hunjan

Friday 21st May 2021 – Sunday 22nd August 2021 , 12:00am to 12:00am

This exhibition is a collection of new works by visual artist Bhajan Hunjan, developed during the Covid-19 UK Lockdown. This year has been a time of isolation, reflection and basic survival. Making these works gave Bhajan a personal sense of perseverance and a wider insight into our strength as a society, seeing beauty through unity. Each piece looks to portray a sense of harmony; the harmony that can exist in humanity if we all allow it to happen.

Developed using a combination of white embossed and oil mono-printed paper, each piece is an intricate web of delicate cut-outs. With an image in mind, Bhajan cuts and layers each piece by hand, organically creating each relief artwork one layer at a time. Each piece requires a significant amount of concentration and time, which, according to Bhajan, “keeps me in the moment”.

“Throughout her career, artist Bhajan Hunjan has investigated the relation between abstract and representational forms, using a variety of materials and artistic mediums. Although trained as a painter and printmaker, she has also worked in ceramics, metalwork, and stone. Her work incorporates an expressive use of colour, and in union with her use of line, shape, and symbol, reflects particular moods, emotions and sensibilities in non-narrative ways.” - Dr Alice Correia, Independent Art Historian, 2020
Bhajan has a studio in Bow Arts’ P1 Studios, just a stone’s throw from the Nunnery Gallery and Café. Bhajan also works extensively with Bow Arts’ Learning Department as an artist educator, working with young people of all ages to create installations in schools and community environments. Bhajan has also completed commissions for the public realm and built environment in the UK, which include site specific installations for both internal and external spaces.
