Bienveillance, 2026, ink and collage on watercolour paper by Julie Vermeille

Memory is a starting point for making artwork. I am trying to capture the mood, the feeling, the texture from
a “moment in time”. As memory fades and time alters the reminiscence, sensations might also evolve. I am interested in the link between the then and now; how events are etched in our mind.

I am hoping to capture these intangibles sensations on paper, working with series might allow me to get to the
chore of it. By taking away details and going towards abstraction, I am trying to retain the essence of the
connection. Only the meaningful remains.

The white space left in the work has always been an equally important part of my work.

Hopefully it allows the viewer to pause, project their own experience, allowing an individual recollection to
become a relatable universal experience.
