Poplar HARCA and Bow Arts Trust are pleased to announce the launch of PHoto 10, a photography exhibition celebrating the people and places of Poplar by local residents. Following a call for entries in October and November, in conjunction with the delivery of digital photography workshops across the community, submissions were received in three age categories under 16’s, 16-25 years and 25+ and two themes: Poplar People and Poplar Places.
From these entries a large number have been selected for exhibition at the Nunnery in December. The aim of the exhibition is to reflect the rich and diverse vision of the people who live in the area. The selection panel included local photographer Rehan Jamil, who’s work has been commissioned by the British Council and explores Muslim identity in the UK and Ian Teh, a British photographer of Malaysian decent, who’s work reflects upon man’s impact on the environment.
At the celebration opening prizes will be awarded to the best photographs in each age and theme category. Each award winner will receive a Fujifilm Finepix A850 Digital camera, with charger, 1 MB memory card and camera case. The full starter kit to nurture and encourage their individual talent. Please join us for the celebration opening event.
PHoto 10 has been generously funded by Poplar HARCA (Housing and Regeneration Community Association) to celebrate their 10th anniversary this year and continues the fruitful partnership with Bow Arts Trust. Poplar HARCA is a non-profit organisation and a registered charity, which manages around 8,500 former council homes in Tower Hamlets. Their role is to help bring about the social, urban and economic regeneration of the Poplar area, an area with long-standing social and economic deprivation. Emphasis is placed on community empowerment and pride. They won the Housing Corporation’s prestigious Gold Award for ‘Empowering Communities’ in 2007.
