Porcelain Workshop with artist Victoria Burgher

Saturday 23 October 2021 - 12:00 am

Victoria Burgher is an artist and educator whose work is on display in the Nunnery Gallery’s highly anticipated annual Bow Open Show, this year selected and curated by gal-dem.
On the 23rd of October, Victoria will host a workshop in the Bow Arts Courtyard using porcelain paper clay to create simple handmade vessels such as tealight/candle holders. She will walk you through her technical practice, and you will have the opportunity to experiment with surface texture and learn simple construction techniques. Everyone in attendance will first make a tealight holder as a group, then all participants can make their own vessels using the skills learnt with guidance from the artist.
Her sculptural practice, rooted in craft processes, focuses on a conceptual use of colonial commodities to visually re-examine whitewashed narratives of empire. A sense of place and personal identity as an artist from a colonising country are engrained in her approach to making. She has a background in ceramics, but has also used sugar, bread, rubber, copper, indigo, salt and bagasse for her sculptures and installations in the 2021 exhibition.
