RAW Labs X Art Residency – The Notebooks of Kazumi Fujimoto: Portraits on Paper

Monday 14th April 2025 , 7:00pm to 9:00pm

For our 10th residency at Royal Albert Wharf as part of the RAW Labs X Art Residency, join artist Jamie Zubairi as he aims to questions the layers of fiction and reality an artist goes through to create a body of work.

Residency dates | Apr 14 – Apr 27
Workshop | 14 Apr, 7:00pm – 9:00 pm Private View | 21 Apr 7:00pm
Open Studios | 15 – 18 Apr, 18 – 26 Apr 10:00am – 4:00pm

In August 2022, Jamie Zubairi (Zooby) performed in IN THE WEEDS by Joseph Wilde, playing Kazumi Fujimoto, a scientist documenting his surroundings. As the play opened, Zooby sketched the audience in real time—A6 drawings that now serve as the foundation for this residency’s larger works.

This residency explores the intersection of fiction and reality in artistic creation. Where does the artist end and the character begin? Do artists sketch to be seen, to refine their practice, or to invite interpretation? These quick, 15-second sketches—created under performance pressure—raise questions of identity, perception, and vulnerability.

IN THE WEEDS, directed by Rebecca Atkinson-Lord and produced by Mull and Antobar Theatres, follows Fujimoto’s search for a mythical sea creature. In the play, his notebook is lost in water; in reality, Zooby salvaged 28 water-damaged sketchbooks from the production. This project continues that exploration—examining the layers of self, performance, and artistic truth.
