Schools in View: A Celebration of Art in Schools 2008

Friday 16th May 2008 , 12:00am to 12:00am

This exciting annual exhibition provides a rare opportunity to share some of the exceptional artwork being produced by local young people working with 23 professional artists and performers. This exhibition is dedicated to the work of 20 local schools and is supported through the long standing partnership between Bow Arts Trust and St Paul’s Way Community School in Poplar.

This truly diverse show presents a wonderful cross section of the talent and creativity fostered by young people in the borough. These young artists achieve truly entertaining and professional results while; travelling back in time using film and green screen techniques, building a giant mirrored telescope or even while getting to grips with the complexity of scientific research and developmental life processes using computer morphing technology! One project depicts the journey of the blood employing playful techniques like filming through a fish bowl, whilst in another more cerebral corner young people explore new and inventive ways to evaluate and understand the actual process’s involved in their creativity and work.

All these inspiring ideas have been produced by young people working alongside professional artists commissioned through the Bow Arts Trust education programme. This exhibition gives us just a glimmer but a valuable glimmer of the tremendous wealth of creativity and sheer diversity that is present in our East London schools. They will be tomorrow’s new creative generation!

This year our exhibition has expanded to include a musical offering from year 1 and 4 children at Clara Grant Primary School as well as a competition for the family of schools, an initiative in collaboration with our education partner St Paul’s Way Community School and Specialist Arts College. This year each of the Tower Hamlets primary and secondary schools included in the family of schools will be submitting designs on the theme of friendship. The young people will be collecting their art prizes at 2.00 pm just before the doors open to the public.

Also featured will be work from Central Foundation School for Girls and Brampton Manor Secondary School, this work was produced Through the Bow Arts Trust and the Nunnery Gallery project as part of the ‘enquire programme’ . This is a project designed by Engage, to encourage and promote the use and understanding of galleries for young people, funded by the Arts Council, DCMS and DFESCF as part of the Strategic Commissioning Museums and Galleries Education Programme
