She’s My Beard

“Beard is a term describing a person who poses as a false date or romantic partner to mislead others about the nature of a relationship, and/or to conceal someone’s sexual orientation.”
In She’s My Beard Walter and Zauner embark on the second installment of their collaborative project together which began in Rome with their show ‘Germany-1,England-1’ at Temple University Gallery in June 2008.
The artists met in Rome at a dinner hosted by the Swiss Institute. Walter was Sainsbury Scholar 2006-8 at the British School at Rome and Zauner was resident at the Villa Massimo Accademia Tedesca during 2008. They found in each other a personal and professional friendship that they sought to develop through making paintings together.

She’s My Beard comprises individual and collaborative paintings by each artist. The paintings have been made in Rome and London, each artist starting paintings which are in turn handed to the other and back again until an ending has been agreed. The experiment acts as a break for each artist from their main practice. It is an arena to test painterly gestures, spatial possibilities and linguistic ideas that may be ploughed back into their individual projects.
The show is supported by the Bow Arts Trust and Poplar Harca through whom Walter rents a live-work space in Balfron Tower.
John Walter (born Dartford 1978)
Studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford 2001 and the Slade School of Fine Art London 2003. He was artist in residence at K.I.A.C, Dawson City, Canada in 2006.
