Stitching Stories Workshop: Explore identity, gender and sexual history through community art

Wednesday 13th December 2023 , 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Get stitching in an exciting evening of self-reflection and embroidery with the Museum of Sex Objects.

A special collaboration is coming to The Lab at Oaklands Rise. Join the Keeper of the Museum of Sex Objects for an embroidery workshop encouraging participants to explore their own experiences and connections to figures working within sex, sexuality, and gender topics.

In this workshop, you will be invited to choose your own ‘sexual hero’ from history and create your own piece to be added to The Lab’s current installation, ‘The Wall of Sexual Heroes’.

The Wall of Sexual Heroes is a community art project featuring stories, people, objects and inventions that have marked milestones in the sexual revolution. All identities and all skill levels are encouraged to contribute a story!

The project will travel and be featured across the country alongside the Museum’s collections.

Materials will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring any additions they would like to include in their work. Examples could include beads, glitter or fabric.

No prior knowledge of embroidery or textile arts is required in order to attend this workshop.

Please note this is a 16+ event.

More about the Museum of Sex Objects

The Museum of Sex Objects is a response to renewed interest in identity and sexual freedom.

Tracing our sexual past is not always easy; many clues are locked away in old documents or institutions, possibly thought too subversive. The collection of storytelling objects celebrates sexual heroes, moments, and places. The pieces are like historical novels, woven from fragmented records and whispers.

It is through the Museum’s curious artefacts that our hidden sexual histories are revealed. The Keeper of the Museum of Sex Objects considers it essential to share these compelling tales of sexual history and identity from our collective past.

As in more tolerant times, it is easy to forget that the struggle for sexual freedom came at such a cost to countless individuals and communities, with many losing their lives. Although we live in more accepting times, they are uncertain, and we should not take our liberties for granted by becoming complacent.

Be ever vigilant!
