Celebrating its twentieth anniversary, Bow Arts announces the preview of the exhibition STRUCTURE TEXTURE FUTURE, at the Nunnery Gallery on Friday 19th June 2015 6pm-9pm (there will be a speech by curator Dr Shahidha Bari at 8pm in the Nunnery Gallery)
The fifteen artists, selected from the 500 Bow Artists are:
Aglaé Bassens, G. Roland Biermann, Malina Busch, Stephen Buggle, Lizzie Cannon, James Lander or Those Who Wish to Remain Anonymous, Leah Miller-Biot, Elizabeth Murton, Marcus Orlandi, Eugene Perera, Simon Rattigan, Daniela Sarigu, Suzana Tamamović, Nye Thompson and Adam Walker.
This year’s exhibition is curated and selected by Rosamond Murdoch, Nunnery Gallery Director and guest curator Dr Shahidha Bari, lecturer in Romanticism at Queen Marys University of London. Dr Bari says
The works selected here gather around two interlocked themes: ideas of ruin and repair, as might be understood in the terms of the industrial and the natural. In many ways, this grounds this collection in its home in east London, in a part of the city that is a heartland for creativity and making, but which is also constantly building and displacing.
Dr Shahidha Bari joins a long line of celebrity and guest curators including Graham Norton, David Dimbleby, Mo Mowlam and Mark Wallinger who have all helped Bow Arts in its work to raise the profile of emerging and established artists. Dr Bari says
I was honoured to be asked to curate Bow Arts Open, especially in their 20th anniversary year. Although I have an active interest and involvement in contemporary art, curating an exhibition was a new and exciting experience and I learnt much from it.
Bow Arts, like my own university QMUL, has a significant positive impact on the aspirations and education of young people, particularly those from the east of London. There’s a natural synergy between our organisations and I was delighted to be given the opportunity to develop that further.
