Testing the Limits – David Rickard

As part of its on-going program of inviting contemporary artists to exhibit in the Nunnery Gallery, Bow Arts and the Nunnery are pleased to present a solo show of David Rickard.

Over the years David Rickard has investigated phenomena such as gravity, alchemy and chance through a series of sculptures, drawings and installations that involve spatial and physical experimentation. Often using ordinary objects as a starting point, Rickard explores new potential avenues for their use and in doing so maps the architecture where they are sited, redefining our concept of spatial and objectual perception. Constantly moving along a fine line between sculpture and performance, art and physics, Rickard’s work engages the viewer as an active player. Once the artist has established a trajectory, a combination of necessity and chance takes place, making the ordinary extraordinary and generating new readings of our surroundings.

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Testing the Limits’, Rickard will create three site-specific installations that will engage directly with the three rooms that form the Nunnery Gallery.

Born in New Zealand, Rickard has been based in London since 2002. Recent exhibitions include ‘Time + Trace’, Sumarria Lunn, London (2011); ‘Round the Clock’, the 54th Venice Biennale (2011); ‘Beyond Ourselves’, the Royal Society of Science, London (2011); ‘Appetite for Destruction’, Nest, The Hague (2010);‘Test Flights’, The Economist Plaza, London (2009); ‘Solid State’, Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venice (2008).
