Miloushka Bokma (The Netherlands)
CYCLES 6’54” 2015
Bokma explores the themes of meeting in this film – the coming together of people and the farewell. One embrace divides into 22 different encounters. Observing the physical and emotional interplay between a circle of people, it is a quiet meditation on human interaction.
Charlotte Ginsborg (UK)
22:22 30’51” 2017
22:22 paints a vivid portrait of Tom Sietas, world record holder in Static Apnea – the ability to hold one’s breath under water. His record stands at a phenomenal 22 minutes 22 seconds, a feat that has confounded scientists worldwide. The film combines evocative underwater photography of a record attempt with a contemporary dance performed to a live piano score devised for the film by the choreographer Kirill Burlov and the composer Gabriel Prokofiev.
As the tension of the record attempt mounts the story that links the two activities is revealed through the pianist’s live narration. The film interweaves documentary and fiction to reveal what drives Tom to push his body to such extraordinary physical and mental extremes; For Tom, to deny breath is to ultimately find life.
