Workshop: Creating a Thamesmead Tapestry with Marcus Orlandi
Wednesday 13th May 2026 , 2:00pm to 4:00pm
What does a living room mean to you? Neighbours and visitors are invited to the Lakeside Centre to join artist Marcus Orlandi and respond to the question by creating a stunning new textile artwork to reflect the lives of people in Thamesmead.

In this workshop, Marcus will guide you through the steps to learn the basics of appliqué: a needlework technique to illustrate images using fabric.
You are invited to bring an object that means something personal to you, and turn it into an appliqué patch for a unique hanging tapestry. Your objects and stories are central to this project, so please bring along an item you find interesting. If it’s a good story, we may even include it in the exhibition!
The project was inspired by Asafo flags: beautiful textile pieces made by communities in Ghana, which are created to celebrate identity, history and communal pride.
This is part of a series of workshops to create the Thamesmead Tapestry. The final piece will go on display as part of a living room-style exhibition in June, during the London Festival of Architecture.
No drawing or textile skills are required, and all materials will be provided.
