living in fear of quicksand by Maria Amidu

Friday 3rd March 2023 – Sunday 21st May 2023 , 10:00am to 4:00pm

An exhibition by Maria Amidu exploring the the artist’s personal story and its relationship to the Lincoln Estate in Bow in the 1970s

The Nunnery Gallery in partnership with Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives is delighted to announce the forthcoming exhibition living in fear of quicksand by Maria Amidu – a two-part exhibition across both venues of new work and existing archive material. Opening in early spring 2023, living in fear of quicksand will be Maria’s first UK solo exhibition and explores the artist’s personal story and its relationship to the Lincoln Estate in Bow in the 1970s.

At Nunnery Gallery living in fear of quicksand will present five new works; a film piece, a sound work, a text-based installation, a bespoke paint colour and a limited edition print work – 25 years in the making – that is the genesis of living in fear of quicksand. The work traces the journey from a sudden life-changing moment in the artist’s childhood and early life in state care, to consequential experiences in her adult life.

The exhibition will continue a short bus ride away in Mile End at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives with an archival display of material that has been integral to the development of the artworks.

A programme of public talks and events will accompany living in fear of quicksand to be announced in early 2023.
