Making Moves: Learn Chess with Check-Mates Chess Club

South-east London creative Raymond Ukwenya is bringing ‘The Coolest Chess Club in Woolwich’ to the Lakeside Centre Open Studios this September.

Sit down in Thamesmead Social café for a game of chess, and learn to play in this friendly, beginner-focused workshop —no experience required. 

1. Intro + A Brief History of Chess 
   A quick introduction to the game of chess. 

2. How to Play Chess 
   Learn the basics of piece movement, simple rules, and tips for starting a game. 

3. Live Masterclass Game 
   Raymond will play a guest participant, explaining the strategy behind each move for visitors to watch and learn.

3. Free Play + Drop-in Style Finish
   Visitors can join the open chess boards, practice and chill — no experience required.
