Private view: living in fear of quicksand

Thursday 2nd March 2023 , 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Join us for the private view of living in fear of quicksand by Maria Amidu – an exhibition exploring a fragile relationship to home. Read more about the exhibition here
A still from 1973 by Maria Amidu (2022)

In partnership with Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives, we proudly celebrate the opening of living in fear of quicksand. This solo exhibition spans across both venues and explores the fragmentary nature of memory in relation to a fragile experience of home through a range of new work and existing archive materials.

The Nunnery Gallery will be exhibiting five new works: a limited-edition print work – 25 years in the making and the genesis of living in fear of quicksand; a film piece; a sound work; a text-based installation; and a bespoke paint colour. A memoir of sorts, the print work traces the artist’s early life living on the Lincoln Estate within walking distance of the Nunnery, a childhood in state care in Bexhill-on-Sea, and consequential experiences in her adult life. The exhibition continues at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives with an archival display of material that has been integral to the development of the artworks. Their launch event will take place from 2-4pm on Saturday 4 March and will feature a documentary film screening of The Flat (BBC).

The Nunnery Gallery will be open from 6-9pm. Drinks and snacks from the Nunnery Café will be served throughout.
