Artist-In-Residence Events: Urban Legend of Alberta Gallion

Sunday, April 15, 2018 to Friday, June 8, 2018
RAW Labs, Norton Quays, Royal Albert Wharf, London, E16 2QJ

East London is full of inspiring stories. Social and cultural histories with themes that are relevant today, such as housing, migration, poverty, and dissent. Stories of creativity and resilience – from the Bow Match Women’s Strike to the Ford Dagenham machinists’ walkout

Jojo Hynes is the current Bow Arts artist in residence at RAW Lab. Jojo is running arts workshops to create a future Heroine for the area. Her name will be ‘Alberta Gallion’. Alberta will be an urban legend inspired by local Heroines past and present and take stimulus from the architecture of Royal Albert Wharf by Notting Hill Housing.

Each workshop you will explore a range of techniques and ideas including:

  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Painting
  • Collage
  • Digital Media

These free workshops will be inspired by the local area, its past-present-future heroines and the built environment. The artworks made in the workshops will form part of a collaborative procession and exhibition on June 14th. Please feel free to bring your own photos, stories and artworks to these workshops.

The outcome of the arts workshops will be a procession around the area to honour the creation of ‘Alberta Gallion’. The Procession will include banners, soundtracks, costumes and artworks made during the workshops. It is an event to celebrate the community of the new built environment of Royal Albert Wharf and its new heroine ‘Alberta Gallion’.

Everyone is free to join the procession on June 14th. Come walk, dance, meet the community and welcome ‘Alberta Gallion’ to Royal Albert Wharf.
