‘Stretch and Spring’ is a new public mural created by Bow Arts artist Will Redgrove, commissioned by NHG Homes, part of the Notting Hill Genesis Group, to mark an exciting new chapter for Hackney Wick and its creative community. 

The mural was commissioned by NHG Homes to celebrate its upcoming Hackney Yards development, a mixed-use affordable housing and commercial scheme at a prime location straddling Hackney Wick station, while supporting public art that speaks to local history and creating a welcoming visual landmark for residents, artists, and visitors. ‘Stretch and Spring’ captures the vibrancy of the neighbourhood. The mural is accessible for the public to view just moments away from Hackney Wick station, reflecting the shared commitment of Bow Arts and the Notting Hill Genesis Group to placemaking, social value and the role of creativity in shaping vibrant, connected communities.

Whilst Hackney Yards is located at the heart of the extensive reimagining of Hackney Wick, the mural celebrates the area’s already established rich industrial, cultural and creative heritage. Will Redgrove’s mural draws inspiration from Hackney Wick’s layered past, from its glassworks and silk production which inspired the new building names at Hackney Yards, to the former greyhound racing course that once brought crowds to the area until its closure in 1997.

With the construction of Hackney Yards underway, and Bow Arts preparing to open 38 new affordable studios in the heart of the new development at Hackney Wick, the artwork also looks ahead to the area’s future as a place where artists, makers and local communities can continue to thrive. The historic references are woven together with the present-day story of artist studios and creative workspaces, positioning the mural as a celebration of continuity, transformation and shared local identity. 

The mural forms part of a wider partnership between Bow Arts and the Notting Hill Genesis Group, whose work together is helping to secure long-term, affordable creative workspace in one of London’s most distinctive cultural neighbourhoods.

The mural will be on display until early 2027. 

The installation of this artwork was made possible by the help of three additional muralists Dave (@hatch_art), Zach (@Qwynto) and Gavin (@gavinthebad).

About Will Redgrove  

Will was born in Hackney, growing up in the vibrant, multicultural community of east London. It is within this colourful and diverse environment that Will developed his passion for intercultural histories and shared identities.   

He studied Fine Art at the University of the West of England, absorbing the energetic music and street art scene of Bristol and developing an understanding of the role of art within social movements and activism. Will returned to London where he would end up studying Typography and Graphic Design at UAL: London College of Communication.  

Will uses collaborative and co-creative processes throughout his projects utilising workshops and group experimentation to develop ideas into a finished product.  

Will specialises in community engagement, working with a range of groups including students (KS 1-5 and further education), children and adults with SEND, hospice users and young offenders.
