The more we know about something, the easier it is to talk about. As artists, our understanding of our own artistic practices and the deep ‘knowing’ this entails often feels so innate and subconscious that we’re not really sure how to begin articulating it to other people.

This session will give words to those instinctive expressions, equipping you with the tools to present your artistic practice and work in a way that feels genuine, compelling, and invites folks to enquire and dive deeper.

This workshop will be interactive and feature a mixture of tutorial, individual exercises, and optional role play, exploring how to:

  • Identify your intentions for your work
  • Name the values, themes, and inspirations that drive you as an artist
  • Build a ‘library of conversation’ responding to the different contexts where you might have to talk about yourself and your work as an artist
  • Adapt the focus of what to share in different scenarios to enable you to shine
  • Craft a ‘backpocket introduction’ that enables you to situate yourself in a conversation confidently and clearly

What you will gain:

  • Confidence in presenting yourself and your artistic practice in a number of different contexts
  • Identify the driving factors that centre your artistic practice and learn how to lead from there when articulating your work and what you do
  • The chance to rehearse and explore different modes and means of presentation to find something that suits you and your needs as an artist
  • A new network of artists and creative professionals

More about Art & People and Claudia Kennaugh

Art & People is a Bristol-based art advisory service offering guidance to artists and collectors. Founded in 2019 by Claudia Kennaugh in response to 15 years working in the arts as a musician and performing artist, then gallery partner and art advisor. Claudia brings her dual experience to support artists’ professional development with 121 sessions, talks, tutorials and workshops that foster thriving artist communities. Art & People runs development programming for studio groups and arts organisations including Artes Mundi, Bow Arts Trust, Jackson’s Art Supplies, Kindred Studios, Spike Island, Visual Artists Ireland and Wimbledon Art Studios. Claudia has been a judge on the Jackson’s Painting Prize, a speaker at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and is an artist mentor on the BBC One TV programme Make it at Market Series II.

Over her years co-running the Hollywood Road Gallery, London, Claudia sourced works from the UK, Europe & South America to curate annual exhibitions and fairs. She carefully nurtured the careers of their represented artists and offered bespoke services to the gallery collectors, helping them to buy, frame and hang art in their homes. Today Art & People hosts an annual charity exhibition, Precious Postcards. This open call collection is an opportunity for largely unrepresented artists to sell their works to collectors and galleries, whilst raising funds for the FoodCycle charity.
